In Champions Seoul, the first Group A matches have been completed!

DRX 2-1 KRU Esports

DRX beat KRU Esports in a back-and-forth game, with Flashback taking the overall match MVP thanks to his stat line of 51/34/9, absolutely dominating on Abyss with his Cypher.

KRU Esports blitzed past DRX in the first map of Haven, destroying them 13-2 in merely 27 minutes thanks to Keznit on the Neon dropping 18/9/10 with 5 first kills and 0 first deaths + Melser on Omen getting 22/4/7 with 5 first kills of his own as well, getting him the map MVP. Even though Haven used to be one of, if not the strongest map in DRX's map pool, KRU had DRX's number the entire map, managing to counter and outplay every single strategy that DRX cooked up. Hell, DRX even picked the map! One of them was a shocking play by MaKo where he used Omen's ult to teleport into KRU's spawn, even though this particular strat was used very often in the Americas region. As you can expect, KRU shut it down quickly, with Shyy killing the unprepared MaKo and then proceeding to headshot BuZz who was running out of B Garage trying to back him up.

However, DRX fought back hard and managed to cleanly beat KRU on the maps of Abyss and Bind, with both maps having the same scoreline of 13-6 in DRX's favour. Flashback had a godly performance on Cypher in Abyss, with an ACS of 341 and 27/13/6 that helped DRX secure the site he was on every time. On the other hand, Buzz had a great map on Bind, dropping 23/14/2 with 4 first kills as the Raze while diffing Keznit in the process, who could only get 14/16/2.

Unfortunately for Melser, he placed at the bottom of the scoreboard in the 2 maps they lost, being only able to pick up 6/16/6 playing as Harbor on Abyss, and 8/13/6 playing as Brimstone on Bind. One thing I would like to point out is KRU's no duelist composition on Abyss, where they had KAY/O, Cypher, Sova, Omen and Harbor. This was a highly questionable comp, due to the clear lack of entry ability with the loss of the Jett, thus forcing KRU to take mid every time but to little effect as they would go on to only win 4 rounds on their attack side.

Bind was a mirror matchup, with both teams running Raze, Fade, Viper, Brimstone and Gekko, but unfortunately for KRU, DRX was just shooting better with better stats and calling. DRX had a 9-3 half on their defence side which BLG just could not overcome. Even though MaKo had a rare underperformance on this map, only being able to scrape together a stat line of 5/11/9, the rest of DRX was able to carry him to victory.

FNATIC 2-0 Bilibili Gaming

The second map was FNATIC vs Bilibili Gaming, where FNATIC pulled off a clean 2-0 of BLG with a 13-9 on Bind and a 13-4 on Lotus. The match MVP was Chronicle, thanks to his stat line of 35/23/10 on Viper across both maps. However, I must give an honourable mention to hiro, who clutched a 1v3 on Bind to win the map and another 1v2 on Lotus while dropping 29/20/15 in the process.

Bind was BLG's map pick, and whzy had a strong performance on Raze, with 23/16/1 being one of the main reasons BLG could match FNATIC punch-for-punch. Unfortunately, the individual quality of FNATIC was just too strong for BLG to deal with, with Derke and Chronicle both getting 19 kills each and the rest not too far behind. FNATIC was inevitably going to win the map, and they would win the next one as well.

Now was Lotus, FNATIC's map pick, where hiro had a fantastic performance on Fade, dropping 19/7/10 and just having an incredible impact on the map. FNATIC rolled over BLG in this map, with BLG being powerless to stop FNATIC from killing them all, thus leading to a 10-2 on FNATIC's defence side. Yosemite dropped absolute stinkers on both maps, going 8/14 and 6/14 on Cypher and Viper, a far cry from when he destroyed NRG last year.

One must admire hiro's near-perfect replacement of Leo, as they have lost 0 games since the start of Split 2, with hiro fitting seamlessly into the Leo-shaped hole in FNATIC. You have to give props to FNATIC for being able to create such a great environment for a young rookie like hiro to be able to thrive and perform.

Congratulations to DRX and FNATIC, who will face each other next in the upper bracket, and commiserations to KRU and BLG who will drop down to the lower bracket, and face each other under the threat of elimination from Champions Seoul.

Upcoming matches

Coming up next, the first matches in Group B are here!

First on the calendar is LEVIATAN vs Talon Esports, the ruler of the Americas versus the Pacific dark horse. LEV is hoping to fix their terrible showing in Shanghai, and with everyone on the team popping off recently, they have a decent chance of winning Champions altogether. Talon on the other hand, well... Let's just say there isn't much expectation after their performance in the Pacific playoffs. However, one point to be made is that Frost, the head coach of Talon, has said in an interview that they were saving strats for Champions, and with the absolute unknown that is Primmie, perhaps this might become a David vs Goliath situation.

Secondly, we have Team Vitality and Trace Esports, the 2nd and 3rd teams of their regions respectively. There isn't much of a storyline to comment on here, to be honest other than the traditional Chinese underdogs, but Sayf has been absolutely smashing it after finally returning to the duelist role and hopefully, Trexx can regain more of his 2023 form if VIT wants to make it into playoffs. While for Trace, Biank has an incredibly high ceiling as shown when he was still in BLG against NRG, but now his form has dipped a bit, so perhaps if he and the deadly duo of FengF and Kai start popping off, Trace might have a chance of making playoffs after all.

News

  • Lmemore from RRQ has announced his restricted free agency on X, with online speculation that he might be moving to GE and that Kush from Boom Esports might be replacing him.
