In Champions Seoul, the first 2 matches have been completed!
Team Heretics 2-1 Gen.G Esports
The first match was between Gen.G and Team Heretics, and Team Heretics got the better of Gen.G in a 2-1 win, getting their revenge after their loss in the finals of Masters Shanghai. The series MVP was Meteor, who got 76/48/15 throughout 3 maps, which was 20 kills higher than the next-highest player. Unfortunately for Meteor, he could not carry his team over the finishing line, as t3xture, Munchkin and Lakia had quite the underperformance compared to their usual form.
Abyss was picked by TH first, where Gen.G pulled out a narrow 13-11 win over Team Heretics. Meteor was the map MVP, getting 28/17/5 and 5/4 FK/FD as Yoru. Gen.G used a no Sentinel composition, with the double controllers of Astra/Viper and double duelist of Jett/Yoru and Sova. Yoru doubled as a pseudo-initiator and duelist simultaneously, so they had a slightly stronger attack side but were weaker on the defence side due to the lack of a Sentinel anchor. For TH, they fought Gen.G hard, nearly winning some rounds but unfortunately were unable to close it out.
The second map was Gen.G's pick of Lotus, where TH was the winner of a tough 13-11 match, where they came back down from a 10-4 deficit. Meteor was once again the map MVP, getting 25/17/5 and playing well overall. It was a mirror matchup of Viper/Omen/Fade/Killjoy/Raze, where t3xture managed to get 8/1 FK/FD and Gen.G had 15 first kills overall, but TH were able to either trade them out or managed to win the 4v5 through good teamplay and aim. TH was more balanced compared to Gen.G, with each player getting at least 16 kills or more, while Gen.G had 2 players with 11 and 12 kills.
The deciding map was Bind, where TH prevented the 8-4 comeback by Gen.G with a 13-10 victory. The map MVP was once again Meteor, but Karon had the same K/D, with both getting 23/14. Sadly for Gen.G, Lakia and t3xture had a very poor performance on this map, where t3xture only got 8/18/5 on Raze while Lakia was worse, with 4/18/7 on Skye. Team Heretics used quite an interesting composition, with VIper/Gekko/Astra/Skye/Yoru allowing them to run over Gen.G on their attacking side with an 8-4 score thanks to their multiple flashes compared to Gen.G's source of flashes being only Skye. RieNs had a great impact on the Gekko, with his utility being quite pivotal in the rounds TH won.
Quite the upset victory overall, as most people (including me) had Gen.G winning the rematch. But thanks to the exploits of Boo and Benjyfishy and the uncharacteristic poor performance of t3xture, Munchkin and Lakia, Team Heretics were able to claim safe passage to the playoffs.
Post-Match Interviews:
Team Heretics insights
Q*: This was your first time playing against Gen.G. In the teaser, you really wanted to play against them as they were the current best. How was the overall experience, and did Gen.G live up to your expectations? (Question from Sportskeeda Esports' Sneh to MiniBoo)* | MiniBoo: This was probably the hardest game I have ever played in my career. My head was hurting after the game. They played really good. We also played really good but this team we were better. They definitely lived up to my expectations. It was a really fun game to play and I hope it was a fun game to watch. |
Q*: I want to know more about the Abyss pick. When you go for a map where you have no info about the other team, how do you guys prepare for that particular situation. What did you think of their performance on the map, and how did you counter their playstyle throughout the series?(Question from Arnab to neilzinho)* | neilzinho: It's kinda difficult when you have no footage of a team but we did some good prep. We knew that was going to be their comp or at least a good idea it would be their comp. It wasn't too much of a surprise and we focused on ourselves. Gen.G played their own game freely and we learnt a lot from that game. We lost both pistols and it still came pretty close. I am happy with that. In terms of playstyle, they don't really change their comps that much. There is not much change in their playstyle and we just got used to it. |
Q*: You mentioned that this is not the team's final form during the short interview between the maps. What things can be improved by the end of the tournament? (Question to neilzinho)* | neilzinho: After the first map, I did say we are not at our final form yet. I do think that it's partly because we are coming into this tournament after a slump. I have told these guys thousand times, and they are probably bored of hearing it that every team in every sport can have their highs and lows. If you power through the hard times and get back to the top, you can reach even higher heights. We are not there yet. It's a part of the process. We had a few rough weeks in Stage 2. I think the guys had a good rest, and they are going to grow more in this tournament. We are just going to keep improving. The fundamentals can get better but we have more time now. It's also about confidence and today's win will help a lot in that regard. |
Gen.G Esports insights
Q: We saw some visible frustrations on the team after some round losses? Do you think that was because of some mental toll on the team, or were their other factors in play? (Question from Strafe Esports) | Munchkin: I think it's a little bit of both. I do agree that we didn't have the best mental for today's game but we had other aspects affecting us as well. We had lot of smokes in the arena due to the smoke machine. It caused some issues with our breathing. It did get better in the third map. However, it makes everything foggy. We can't really look at the monitor clearly. Overall, it was that external aspect as well. |
Q: Did you feel any differences in TH's approach to the match with MiniBoo in the roster, compared to their roster at Shanghai with paTiTek? (Question from Strafe Esports) | Munchkin: I would like to give props to paTiTek because he played extremely well in the grand finals. They were a strong team back then as well. However, with MiniBoo joining the team and playing with the intended roster, it gives them a lot more options when it comes to the Agent pool. They definitely have a different approach to the game. |
Q: After a loss like this, what goes behind the scenes for the coaching staff, as well as the players, to reset and come back? Does this loss give the team a good wake-up call? (Question from Arnab to solo) | solo: It's either going to be Sentinels or FPX. Once we get to see who we face next, we will work on our map veto and prepare for the maps. We will make sure we will put in the best prep we can. The players don't have the type of mentality that will kind of die down or crumble just because of one loss. I think they can reset and come back stronger. |
DRX 2-0 FNATIC
The second game was FNATIC vs DRX, where to the surprise of everyone once again, DRX upset FNC in a clean 2-0. The series MVP was undeniably BuZz, with his 47/26/2 stat, incredible 14 first kills and only 5 first deaths making him the main reason why they beat FNC.
Abyss was up first, having been chosen by DRX. It was a close battle, but thanks to 6 straight round wins on the defence side off the back of BuZz's great AWPing skills with Jett, the first half was slightly in DRX's favour with a 7-5 half, and they managed to close it out thanks to MaKo and BuZz. However, Alfajer was the one sole player who made it close in the first place, as thanks to his strong stats of 25/16/7 on Killjoy and the 2v5 with Hiro, he was the one making the match remained competitive even after BuZz steamrolled them, thus making him match MVP.
The second map was Lotus, FNC's map pick. The map followed the same script as Abyss, as DRX once again won 6 straight rounds this time on their attack side to secure another 7-5 half. However, DRX diverged from the script from this point on, as they managed to wipe the floor with FNATIC on their defence side, getting 6-1, winning the map 13-6 and the series. BuZz was the map MVP this time around, dropping 23/13/1 and a shocking 8/2 FK/FD ratio on Raze, an absolute monster with a massive impact on both halves of the map. Alfajer did his best on this map once again, anchoring FNC with 20/12/2 on Killjoy again but other than Derke, who managed a respectable 16/14/3 on Raze, the rest of FNC disappointed, with the rest of them performing mediocrely, not being able to get past double digits n kills and being the first death half of the time.
Post-Match Interviews:
Q: Gen.G players have mentioned that things were a bit foggy due to the smoke machines. Did that affect your performance as well? (Question from on-site media to MaKo) | MaKo: All the fog made the mousepad go really moist. It was hard for us to adjust our aim because our mouse wasn't working well with the mousepad being so damp. There were definitely inconveniences due to the smoke machine |
Q: What would be the things you would be working on before playoffs? (Question from on-site media to termi) | termi: There are still gaps in our game. We need to work on that. I feel like we need to stay more calm, and if we do that during those games then we would be a stronger team. We are still in the process of having those young players gain more experience. With more time given, the players will be more comfortable staying calm and collected in hectic moments. I personally want the players not to think too much about what it takes to stay calm in those clutch situations. |
Q: The meta on Abyss is changing fast since it's a new map. Today, we saw a new team comp Gen.G was playing against Heretics. What do you think about Gen.G's macro and comp on Abyss? You were reacting to Fnatic's actions on Abyss well without calling timeouts. What do you think helped you do a good job on Abyss? (Question from on-site media to MaKo) | MaKo: In terms of Gen.G's comp and interpretation of Abyss, it is a pretty big map. They have an idea similar to Breeze when it comes to Abyss. They want to make those quick rotations and having quick backup. I was able to notice mistakes on both sides during our match. I was quick to notice these mistakes and communicated them with my teammates very well. |
Congratulations to TH and DRX for making it to playoffs, and commiserations to FNC and GENG who will drop down to the lower bracket, and face the winner of the lower bracket from their respective group while in danger of elimination from Champions Seoul.
Upcoming matches
Coming up next, the second Winner's matches in Group C and D are here!
On the left, we have LEVIATAN, wanting to show their dominance by quickly cutting down Talon and aiming to do the same to Trace. On the right is Trace Esports, the absolute unknown, the pitch-black horse, with nothing to lose and everything to gain; they meet America's powerhouse head-on. I would favour LEV to win, but with how my pickems have gone, it's up to both teams to see who wins and who loses.
Coming up next is EDG, the emperor of China; with the deadliest AWPer in the world and looking revitalised, they could beat anyone in this form. But facing them is G2, who caused the extinction of PRX; the perfect team, with masterful team play and fundamentals, who are tipped to make it to the Grand Finals. I would favour G2 to win here, as they look as clean as ever in their gameplay.
