Sentinels 2-0 FunPlus Phoenix

he first match was Sentinels vs FunPlus Phoenix, where contrary to everyone's expectations, SEN had an immaculate 2-0 win over FPX. The match MVP was Zekken on Raze, dropping 39/24/12 and 9/5 in FK/FD to silence all the doubters after his performance against Gen.G. All of Sentinels performed well, with them all going positive and with at least 77% KAST or higher. Unfortunately for FPX, they underperformed when it most mattered, with Lysoar being the most prominent one, getting only 11 kills over both maps. Of course, every other member of FPX went negative with the sole exception of Autumn, so you cannot simply blame the loss on Lysoar's poor performance.

Bind was played first, picked by FPX. The map ended 13-8 after a dominant second half by Sentinels, where they won 9 rounds in a row on defence as FPX simply had no way to get out of the chokepoints with their extremely off-meta comp of Yoru/Fade/Omen/Viper/Chamber. The match MVP was Zekken on Raze, getting 20/13/8, 3/3 FK/FD and being pivotal in most rounds of their round wins. The first half started weak for Sentinels, as they did not have a good attacking side due to just slow walking and contacting into the sites. FPX easily shut them down, leading to an 8-4 first half in FPX's favour. However, the script flipped on Sentinels' defence side, where FPX could not even manage to get out of the chokepoints half the time, and even when they did, Sentinels had great retakes to ensure a flawless victory.

The second map was Lotus picked by Sentinels, where SEN soundly beat FPX in a slick 13-5 after a powerful first half which ended 9-3. The map MVP was once again Zekken, getting 19/11/4 and 6/2 FK/FD on the way to clinch the overall match MVP. Of course, one cannot name Zekken without his deadly partner Tenz, who also got 19/11/10 of his own. If these 2 are popping off, it usually means a certain victory for Sentinels, and today was no exception, as FPX just could not withstand Sentinels' retakes, losing 5 post-plants. Sentinels cleaned up soon after, ending the game with 4 straight attacking round wins.

Overall, Sentinels have regained their form at the right moment, and they may have a chance at defeating the APAC titans of Gen.G. Unfortunately, FPX's journey has ended here, and we wish them farewell.

Post-Match Interviews:

Sentinels insights

Q: You played your first match against a Chinese team. How did you prepare for them and what are your thoughts on the region? (Question from on-site media to johnqt)

johnqt: We just prepared how we do usually. We studied the opponent and discussed what we wanted to do. FPX has a unique style. They play very special comps and they are very aggressive. Everyone has their playstyle and they just go for stuff. They don't care about man's advantages or correct plays. They just go for the plays and the like. The Chinese region is very strong. It's only their first year in franchising and I expect them to be even better. I think we can see a Chinese team win a Masters or Champs down the line for sure.

Q: You have made it to the Champions playoffs twice now. How do you compare the experience with BLG last year and this year with Trace? What are the biggest similarities and differences you see between the 2024 Trace and 2023 BLG? (Question from Pedro Romero to Biank)

Biank: It's the difference between the team's playstyles. I think there is a big change in myself as well. I have become more mature. In BLG, they encouraged every player and had better individual performances. In Trace, it's a lot more about teamwork. Trace has really good discipline as well.

Q: What gave the team the confidence today? (Question from on-site media**)**

johnqt: I think the confidence comes from players realizing they can be innovative and creative in the game, and not be rigid. The first game against Gen.G was an off-game. In the six days we had, we made sure to go back to our micro plays and ensure we were more creative on Defense and go for stuff. We are coming off a win and Gen.G is coming off a loss so I feel the pressure is on them.

Q: We saw the deviation from the Deadlock pick on Lotus, much to the joy of Sentinels' fans. Can we see the Deadlock still picked by the team moving forward? (Question from Sportskeeda's N Siddarth (u/SNH231) to Kaplan)

Kaplan: I think we are definitely at a point where if we ran Deadlock again and lost, I would lose my job instantly. Now, we have a little bit of buffer. You just have to stay tuned and find out if we run it back or not.

Q: How is the atmosphere and mentality of the team coming into the Gen.G rematch? Is there any pressure? (Question from Strafe Esports)

Zellsis: We don't have any pressure and I don't want my teammates to feel any pressure either. I think we have been put in this spot before. It's déjà vu all over again. The rematch will be a lot different. Everyone played pretty well today. We communicated well and showed a lot of confidence.

FPX insights

Q: What are your biggest takeaways from this event and your first year of franchising? (Question from Sportskeeda's Sneh to Autumn)

Autumn: In terms of takeaways from the event, we have a lot of things we can still improve upon. In terms of my first year of franchising, it's been great. We qualified for every international event and made regional finals every time. I think we have done pretty well as a team but we still have some things to work on at the international stage. Whether that's team play or gaps in our team comps, it's back to the drawing board.

Q: Having played in the Challengers League, VCT CN and the international stage, what are the differences you have noticed in these stages? Do you think the players currently in Challengers have the potential to make it to the international stage? (Question from Arnab to Autumn)

Autumn: I think the T2 scene has a lot of great players. It comes down to the opportunity and a bit of luck involved. It comes down to that. I think the big difference between T1 and T2 is that the players are better. You also play the game a lot more and there is more practice.

Q: Why did the team change the comp on Lotus and what was the thought behind the no duelist approach? (Question from Nerditud's Antonio Summer to berLIN)

berLIN: The coaches and I thought that our comps in the past were better and we have used them for a long time. However, we have lost several times before so we thought maybe we should have some change and have a fresh feel for Lotus. We used this comp in scrims and it seemed okay.

Q: FPX had a good Defense half on Bind but fell apart on the Attack side. What went wrong on the Attack side for FPX? (Question from Strafe Esports)

berLIN: It's mainly about my calling. I didn't make many changes. We didn't react that well to our opponents.

AAAAY: I don't think the problem is on our IGL and coaches. They have done a lot of research and preparation for our new comps on Lotus and Bind. My biggest rival today was myself. I could have done better in some of the rounds and clutches. I should review the mistakes I made today.

KRU Esports 2-0 BiliBili Gaming

The second match also followed the same script as the first, where it was another Americas team, KRU Esports, vs another Chinese team, BiliBili Gaming and it ended in a clean win for KRU, the series score being 2-0. The match MVP was Heat, with 39/18/7 and 5/2 FK/FD establishing him as the undisputed MVP. Having moved to the initiator role from his original role of Jett, he has performed extremely well since thanks to his gamesense and fantastic aim.

The first map was Lotus, KRU's map pick. It was a fairly fought map, with it ending 13-9 in KRU's victory. The map MVP was Shyy on Killjoy, dropping 23/13/3 and 2/3 in FK/FD. Of course, Keznit's impact cannot be understated in this match, putting up a strong performance on Raze as well, getting 17/12/11, 3/0 in FK/FD and an amazing 95% KAST. The first half was extremely back and forth, with each side winning 1 or 2 rounds before the other would pull 1 or 2 back themselves. It ended 7-5 in BLG's favour before KRU would win 5 straight rounds on the attack side at the beginning of the second half and close it out 13-9 in the end. Nearly everyone on KRU went positive except for Melser, but all of BLG went negative especially Yosemite on Viper, only getting 5/16/5. This was due to them just getting steamrolled by KRU's entries on their defence side, leading to their downfall.

The second map was Icebox, picked by BLG and was just like the second map between SEN and FPX, where KRU stormed to a 9-3 first half and closed it out easily in the second half leading to a dominant 13-4 game. The map MVP this time was Heat on Gekko, getting 18/7/3 and 4/1 FK/FD while mta was right behind him in ACS, also getting 18/9/4 and 3/0 FK/FD. Just like the previous match, BLG was also unable to stop KRU's retakes, losing out 5 post plants and thus leading to a 9-3 half in KRU's favour. KRU shut down any hope of a comeback in the second half when they won the pistol round, and only dropped one more round before shutting the door on BLG's hopes and dreams.

In the end, BLG were unable to find their 2023 Champions magic, with all of them underperforming quite badly. KRU live on to fight another day, where they will soon meet FNATIC in one last chance to make playoffs for both of them.

Post-Match Interviews:

None today sorry :(

Congratulations to SEN and KRU for surviving to fight another day, and commiserations to FPX and BLG who will be eliminated from Champions altogether in last place.

Upcoming matches

Coming up next, the first elimination matches in Groups C and D are here!

First up is Talon Esports vs Team Vitality, where Primmie hopes to make his mark on Valorant history by following in Karon's footsteps and becoming the next greatest rookie. VIT on the other hand want to make up for the loss to Trace by making it to playoffs and allowing Sayf his return to greatness. I favour Team Vitality to win his matchup, but Talon might be able to pull off a fantastic upset with Primmie and his incredible aim.

The second upcoming match is PRX vs FUT Esports, where after a devastating loss by both sides, they aim to prove that they are not washed. PRX, in particular, have a lot more to prove, after getting annihilated by G2 in their first match, they are desperate to prove that they can still battle amongst the best. Meanwhile cNed wants to return to his glory days, and the main obstacle in his path is currently PRX. I favour PRX to win this matchup, but the inconsistency of PRX might prove to be their downfall.
